In 1960, the late Fr. Joe Collins founded the Community Council to act as an umbrella organization to co-ordinate the voluntary bodies in Ballygall. At that time the only facility for the groups to meet was a run down pre-fab in the school yard, which was totally inadequate. In 1988 a site was made available by the St. Laurence O'Toole Trust to facilitate the building of a much needed Community Centre. The Council, the members of which were gallant and naive, undertook the arduous task of fundraising to help build this Centre. With help from Lottery funding, car boot sales, bingo, quizzes, Church gate collections, sponsored cycles, etc. the building of this Centre was finally achieved in 1990. It was decided to name the building in honour of our former PP, Fr. Seamus Moloney, who had helped in acquiring the site. Today the activities include, Art, Keep Fit, Active Retirement Association, Women's Support, Breastfeeding Association, Community Playgroup, Order of Malta, Horticultural Society, Poker, Crafts, Irish Dancing etc. These activities provide a valuable service and are available to all members of the community. Our aims for the future are to examine future needs within the community and provide assistance wherever necessary. In July this year, we were nominated by Dublin City Council for an award and won first prize in our category in Dublin North West for Community Environment initiative. Later on, were nominated to attend a ceremony for regional winners in a nationwide event in the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Co, Down on Saturday 21 November. Ballygall Community Council emerged as Winners in Category Two, Cities Competition. |
